Physical Education

Intent

  • To ensure high quality PE following the National Curriculum, which encourages, challenges and inspires our pupils to succeed in sport
  • To build confidence and self-esteem, good social skills and a healthy mindset
  • To focus on building a strong sports vocabulary, such as Agility, Balance, Co-Ordination, Stamina, Endurance, Perseverance, Resilience and Spatial Awareness
  • To encourage all children to be physically active with a positive attitude towards sport by providing an enriching and fulfilling curriculum that offers opportunity and equality for all, including pupils with SEND
  • To participate in competitive tournaments, to build character, to learn the importance of sportspersonship and respect
  • To introduce a broad range of sports to children including more unusual ones such as: archery, chess, and tri golf
  • To support children to be able to swim 25 meters unaided by the end of their primary school journey

Implementation

  • From EYFS to Year 6 we offer a clear end point using a structured curriculum map to follow the National Curriculum
  • The PE lead identifies children with SEND and monitors their participation in sport to ensure inclusivity
  • Teachers complete half termly assessments, which are analysed by the PE lead to monitor the progress and attainment of all pupils
  • Teachers work from our Complete PE scheme, which enables teachers to plan and implement high quality PE lessons with progression in skills and knowledge from EYFS to Year 6.
  • *A professional Sports Coach delivers Curriculum CPD and staff/pupil coaching two days per week, in addition to lunch time clubs and range of after school clubs
  • PE monitoring is conducted regularly to ensure that a high standard of PE is being delivered across school, including lesson observations underpinned with developmental feedback
  • We promote pupil leadership skills through our Playground Leader team and dedicated Sports Crew, who lead activities for KS2 Children, and intervention groups considering SEND
  • Lessons are adapted to meet the specific needs of the individual or cohort
  • The introduction of PAL (Physically Active Learning) supports Cross Curricular links through PE lessons
  • We compete in School Games Competitions, Cluster Schools Competitions and host Intra Tournaments to target our pupils who do not necessarily represent one of our competitive teams
  • Sports Day is designed to allow all children to take part in a range of activities, including the opportunity to be engaged in a competitive environment for some events
  • We value ideas and feedback on our current PE Offer. We gather formal and informal feedback, including surveys to ask parents for their thoughts and provide an opportunity for pupil voice to have a positive impact on PE provision
  • Swimming lessons are provided for our Year 3 and Year 4 cohorts on a weekly basis for half a year, where they work to a structured swimming programme led by professional swimming teachers at our local Leisure Centre

Impact

  • Our outcomes demonstrate that consistency and dexterity has progressed across all year groups, pupils excel in a variety of different sports
  • Knowledge, understanding and skill development has progressed
  • Our assessment tracker allows all staff to identify the strengths and weaknesses in specific areas of sporting activities, which is then analysed by the PE lead
  • Children have a breadth of sports vocabulary, a knowledge of sports skills and understanding of rules in a game/match environment
  • Children have good teamwork and communication skills
  • Using Pupil Voice we are able to target potential gaps in our offer, to accommodate sporting activities that are of interest to the children
  • Our children enjoy Physical Activity and there is a positive ethos towards Sporting Competitions across the whole school
  • Children are water confident, and are able to perform basic swimming stokes, demonstrating water safety
